Today, the Nuclear Innovation Alliance (NIA) released an update to the “New Nuclear Energy Guide for State Policymakers.” This Guide serves as an introduction to new nuclear energy projects and policies for state-level policymakers and stakeholders. It describes new nuclear reactor technology and its benefits, provides an overview of enabling federal policies, and reviews state options to incentivize local development of new reactors. The guide also contains case studies of emerging, state-specific new nuclear projects and a collection of topical briefs that elaborate on the characteristics of new reactors with respect to safety, economic benefits, waste management, and when the projects are expected to be completed.
NIA President and CEO, Judi Greenwald, shared the following statement underscoring the significance of the new NIA resource in guiding ongoing initiatives that foster innovation and deployment of new nuclear energy in the United States:
“As new reactor demonstrations progress and projects begin construction, leaders in numerous states in the United States are asking what actions they can take to attract new nuclear projects. States are increasingly recognizing the benefits that the existing nuclear fleet provides in terms of clean, firm power. As states face a future of rising energy demand, new nuclear energy can address this demand while providing economic benefits to the state and communities in which they are built. States are investing millions of dollars for new reactor projects, removing decades-old restrictions on nuclear power plant construction, recognizing nuclear energy as clean energy, and forming technical working groups to determine where new nuclear energy projects make sense in their state. NIA’s updated report answers the key question, "What can states do?" by highlighting the policies, partnerships, and initiatives that can help advance new nuclear energy projects in states.”
